Going outside my comfort zone

In 2013, I have decided to run 13 trail runs.  Why trails?  BeImagecause it takes me out of my comfort zone.  The first race was yesterday.  It started off with muddy leaves, turned to all mud, then turned to knee high water and mud, back to the mud again, then muddy leaves.  At one point a deer ran across my path!  That was cool!  The run ended up being 6.5 miles and it was fun all around.  Next trail run in two weeks.

Burnt out

This is how I felt mentally while running the Chicago Marathon.  Burnt out.  I seriously considered a DNF.  Had I known the city better, I may have actually chosen the DNF.  But, for whatever masochistic reason, I kept trudging on.  Mile after mile after mile.

I did finish.  Eventually.  Nowhere close to the time I had envisioned.  But, I did finish.  Considering the fact that I am not the most athletic person in the world, finishing is huge.    So, in a small way, I am happy that I finished.

When I saw this quote today, I had to apply it to myself.

“This was the day I decided to stop beating myself up and taking away from the glory that is finishing.”

And I have.

It’s not that far away

It’s not that far away –  less than 2 weeks in fact.  What you ask?  The thing that has been in the back of my mind for months – more than months – almost a whole year now.  The Chicago Marathon.  I’ve been training for it for a long time – it now seems like forever.  Chicago will be my second marathon.  Not so long ago – about two weeks ago – I was burnt out, ready to be done.  Now, the more I think about Chicago the more nervous I get.  How will I do?  Who knows.  I’ll be grateful to finish.  I can’t believe it’s almost here.
